What is the area of Asheville, NC like?

I am moving there for school. Don't worry, I know what exactly why I am going there even though I have never seen the place. I know only the basics of the place but I couldn't afford to visit it this summer before I go there in the fall. I really want to know a local's perspective of the city and the areas surrounding it. What are the people like? What are the best things to do there? What are the hidden, only locals know, awesome secrets? I want to know anything and everything about this place, I want to be well informed. Thanks!
